Overview of Services

All households in Gilroy are required to have trash service and automatically receive curbside recycling and composting collection at no additional cost. All materials are picked up weekly.

Recology South Valley has the exclusive franchise to collect and dispose of all residential and commercial waste in the City.

Compost Collection

Gilroy started offering curbside composting collection for food waste in 2005.

Green 96-gallon toters are given to residents for compost service. Additional 32-gallon cans are available for an additional monthly charge if customers have extra food or yard waste.

Residents can compost:

  • Food scraps including meat, bones and dairy
  • Yard trimmings such as leaves, branches and grass
  • Food-soiled paper products like paper plates and cups

Cost

Gilroy has a pay-as-you-throw (PAYT) system for trash collection that incentivizes recycling and waste reduction. The larger the trash can, the more the resident pays for the collection service.

Garbage containers are available in 32, 64 and 96-gallon grey toters and cost $28.66, $41.12, and $53.90 respectively.

Residents have one 64-gallon blue toter for all recyclable materials. Batteries and motor oil can also be set out for recycling pickup with special instructions.
